About Lee & Godshall-Bennett LLP

We founded Lee & Godshall-Bennett, LLC in 2025 in recognition that defending clients from the unprecedented threat to democracy requires an aggressive and uncompromising new approach. We believe there is nothing normal or routine about practicing law in times like ours. Today, protecting individuals from the increasing lawlessness of official institutions requires agility, imagination and nerves of steel.

We are well-tested, trained under fire and thrive in emergency situations. We have experience leading high-stakes federal litigation at every level of the legal system, from administrative courts and state employment agencies to the United States Supreme Court. We are proud of our record defending individuals from deportation, detention, termination from work, suspension from school, family separation through visa denials, and from efforts by the government and major institutions to suppress the fundamental right to free speech, due process and equal protection under the law.

We are not “nine to five” attorneys and we treat our work as more than a job. In contrast to so many corporate law firms caving to threats from the government, we will never be intimidated, no matter how powerful the adversary, because we recognize we are on the front lines of the fight for democracy. Our opponents are Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, Donald Trump, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Ivy League institutions, and corporate employers, jailers and police departments throughout the country.

Most importantly, we believe that clients should be intimately involved in strategy and decision-making throughout each case. There is no “one size fits all” approach to complex civil rights litigation. While we do not expect clients to know the law, we do believe that constant communication with and input from clients and loved ones is an essential part of any case strategy. In most instances, we agree with Justice Louis Brande, who said “sunlight is the best disinfectant.” We aim to harness our connections with journalists and social movements to expose institutions for their anti-democratic actions. Individuals may feel powerless when confronting the U.S. government, corporations and powerful universities, but beyond the law, their greatest asset is often public support.

Finally, we believe that nobody with an important legal case should go without legal representation because they can’t afford to pay. As our friends and colleagues in the non-profit world are stretched to the limits by heavy caseloads, we aim to help pick up the slack by providing lenient, long-term payment plans where needed and by helping clients navigate opportunities for crowdsourcing.
